PLANS: Petition spells out parking concerns

A PETITION packed with more than 350 signatures has been presented to the council in a bid to come up with a solution for parking problems.
The signatures demonstrate the frustration of several residents in New England who are unhappy at plans to tackle parking problems outside their homes.
A number of streets have problems with motorists parking on both sides, often on pavements, making roads too narrow for cars to pass each other.
Peterborough City Council has approached all residents and businesses in Crown Street, Scotney Street, Burmer Road, Lincoln Road, Belham Road and Thistlemoor Road.
It wants to put "no waiting" areas or double yellow lines in the worst affected parts, and is asking people to have a say on whether the rest of the roads should be made "residents only" with possible parking permits or parking available on a "first-come-first-served" basis.
But residents feel this will not work as it will not decrease the number of cars. Instead, they want the council to come up with other solutions, particularly a proper car park.
Spokesperson for the residents Hema Patel, of Burmer Road, said: "We want the council to reconsider the area as a whole and carry out a realistic survey.
"We want the resident views to be considered as well as the area itself.
"They offered us similar proposals in 2004. They weren't appropriate then and they are not now."
Mrs Patel and fellow members of the parking residents committee door knocked every house and business in the area to get signatures to present to the council.
Mrs Patel added: "We got 353 names, but I think we could even get more signatures, the feeling is that strong. We will wait for the cabinet to look at it before we work out what to do next and when our next meeting is to be held."
The committee already has the support of ward councillors Keith Sharp and Charles Swift.
Cllr Swift said: "We must have a meeting with the council and ask that these proposals are scrubbed."
Mark Stevens, the city council's head of transport and engineering, said: "We have received the petition and it will be discussed at the next cabinet meeting."
If anyone would still like to sign the petition they can contact Mrs Patel at 12 Burmer Road or call 07967 112192.
