Residents disagree over parking plans

A PROPOSED scheme to solve the parking problems of two Salisbury streets has sparked a row between residents.
Many of those in Bourne Avenue say they are opposed to a residents' parking scheme, while people living in Wain-a-long Road are largely in favour of the idea.
Despite running alongside one another, the two roads suffer from different problems.

Wain-a-long Road residents complain that their street is used as a free car park by city-centre workers, as well as a high-speed rat run from Laverstock to St Mark's roundabout.
People in Bourne Avenue are upset that parents of Chafyn Grove School pupils block driveways and reduce the road to a single lane for more than half-an-hour at least twice a day.
Julian Bourne, of Bourne Avenue, said residents were worried about the safety implications of the overcrowded street but described the residents' parking scheme as "money-making nonsense".
He said: "We don't need it.
"Resident's parking is not the issue the issue is people not being able to get their cars out of their driveways.
"If there was a fire in one of the houses or the school, a fire appliance wouldn't be able to get down the avenue.
"The simple solution is to have no parking on one side of the street."
But Karen Rogers, who owns the Rokeby Guest House on Wain-a-long Road, said it was exactly what their street needed.
"It's a nightmare (at the moment)," she said.
"Between Monday and Friday, and even on a Saturday, about 95 per cent of the cars belong to people who work in the city but don't want to pay the parking charges.
"In the evenings, there isn't a car on the road. We see traffic here coming so fast, and if it's residents' parking there won't be so many cars parked on the road."
A Salisbury district council spokeswoman said it was looking at 70 responses gathered during April's consultation period, and discussing the option of creating a limited waiting zone.
Residents purchasing a £10 annual permit could park on the street all day but visitors would be restricted to two hours.
"Both Bourne Avenue and Wain-a-long Road are being considered as one scheme," she said.
"The views of residents are the most important factor when deciding if a residents' parking scheme should be introduced.
"The consultation result will now be fed back to councillors and the details of the scheme will be worked up.
"Residents will be consulted again on the detailed proposals, as part of the traffic regulation order process."
