St Martin's students face parking ban

Lancaster Today

PARKING restrictions are to be introduced in streets near St Martin's College, Lancaster, by September to try to solve problems in the area.
One side of Cork Road will be heavily restricted, there will be no parking at any time between Ulster Road and Connaught Road, while from Connaught Road to Shrewsbury Drive there will be no parking from 8am-6pm, Monday to Saturday.
The restrictions will be finalised by Lancaster City Council and introduced on various dates between July and September.
In a report to council, one resident who supported the proposals did fear parking problems would be pushed round the corner to Canterbury and Exeter Avenues.
The area surrounding St Martin's has been plagued by complaints of parked cars blocking the way for emergency vehicles and buses but the council report 'considered the proposals contained in the traffic regulation order will solve that problem'.
A complete parking ban had originally been considered but the same report said many traffic problems were caused by drivers attending St Martin's College so only a time restriction would be needed.
In nearby St Oswald Street, two small lengths of no-parking restrictions will be introduced to provide passing places for traffic.
A St Martin's College spokesman said: "We welcome any initiative to help the parking situation. The college has been working hard to manage parking on and around campus, including discouraging students from bringing cars,
promoting use of public transport, encouraging car pooling among staff and talks delivered to students by our community police team at induction about parking responsibly.
