Whole street hit with parking fines

A WHOLE street of cars was ticketed after parking chiefs decided to change the rules - without warning people.

Ten motorists woke up to find they had been hit with a fine for parking outside their own homes on a Saturday morning - something they had done for years.

Now red-faced parking bosses have decided to overturn 40 parking tickets issued while the street's new signs were still being put up.

But Islington Council's deputy leader still claims the council is "getting it right more often" on parking.

Residents in Mildmay Park, Islington, were dumbfounded when they saw a parking attendant slapping tickets on every single car mid-morning one Saturday.

Notices warning motorists to look out for new parking regulations were not put up until a few days later.

Architect Ian Eggleton, 32, said: "All the residents were out the front. People were ringing everyone's bells. Everyone was angry. Our road used to have parking restrictions Monday to Friday but none on Saturday and Sunday. They changed the restrictions without anyone knowing. There were no warning letters. It seems ridiculous that they can change the rules without telling you."

Another row of unsuspecting cars was also ticketed in Mildmay Park after what appears to be a blunder with the new signs.

While most signs made it clear that that the restrictions had changed, one said motorists were still allowed to park on Saturdays - and between 9.30 and 4pm during the week.

Christopher Brennan, 39, who lives almost opposite the sign, said: "We came back one morning and all the cars had tickets."
The sign has now been changed to match the others.

Lucy Watt, executive member for environment, said: "We don't want to ticket people unfairly and we accept motorists have been surprised. Attendants should not have ticketed this stretch until May 31. We will cancel the 40 tickets. I'd like to apologise for any inconvenience.
