PARKING PETITION KICKS OFF AS DRIVERS STRANDED

HOUSEHOLDERS are petitioning to have their area declared Doncaster's first exclusive "residents only" parking zone.
People living in the Park Road area of the town centre have residents parking permits, but complain that there are no spaces outside their homes to use them in.
The area is congested with people shoppers taking advantage of the one hour free parking in the area, which includes Park Terrace and Christ Church Road.
Sixty residents have signed businesswoman Samantha Maeer's petition to Doncaster Council calling for exclusive parking for people who live there.
Ms Maeer, 39, claimed the situation had got worse over the last few years: "It's been an issue for quite some time, but it used to be mainly on market days. Now it's a constant problem," she said.
Elderly people, parents with pushchairs and tradesmen visiting the houses all experienced problems, she said. After 6pm, when parking becomes free, vehicles were being parked up and left overnight, she added.
Although residents all have a permit allowing them free parking at any time, Ms Maeer said: "What good is a permit if there are no spaces to park in to use it?"
Helen Briggs, community director for safer, stronger and sustainable communities, said: "Our current resident-only parking scheme in that area is strictly enforced and the majority of the residents are satisfied with the system.
"Between 18th July 2005 and 31st March 2006, 160 parking tickets were issued in Park Road alone, which demonstrates that the scheme is well policed.
"There are no 24 hours a day, seven days a week, resident only parking zones in Doncaster at the moment. However, we are willing to listen to any concerns the residents may have on the matter."
