Unreadable' Parking Signs
Luton on Sunday
Hundreds of drivers could have received invalid tickets and be in line for a refund.
Bedford Borough Council may be forced to pay back defective tickets that were issued in The Grove, Bedford, because of the height of signposts.
According to regulations the signposts have to be between 2.1 and 2.45 metres at the base for them to be visible to the public.
The two signs in The Grove are outside this limit at heights of 2.46m and just 60 centimetres making them unreadable.
As a result any tickets issued could be deemed invalid as motorists may not have seen the signs and could argue that they would have parked elsewhere.
A borough council spokesman said: “The council follows the Traffic Signs Regulations which recommend that signs be mounted at the height stated above the footway.
“If the adjudicator has determined something different the council would be interested to read the decision and the context as to how the adjudicator came to this conclusion.”
